XR Center has a variety of VR, AR and MR equipment, cameras and robotics. We are able to use this existing technology in our own projects, in teaching, and in projects we are involved in.

The XR Center is the perfect place to explore these technologies. We have two play areas where you can test the equipment in a safe and guided way. In addition, there is a green screen that can be used for various projects.

VR, AR and MR glasses

Meta Quest 2 & 3

We have Meta Quest 2 and 3 versions. These virtual glasses are very popular with consumers. The Quest are so-called “stand-alone” virtual glasses that do not require a computer to work. Quest 2 will be released in 2020 and Quest 3 in 2023. The VR glasses also support mixed reality.

We will have the opportunity to test a virtual training environment.

Examples

  • Virtual training environment for the preparation of the operating theatre and reception of laboratory samples

Valve Index

Valve Index VR glasses will be released in 2019 and will require access points and a computer with the technology to work. The VR glasses are connected to the computer via a separate cable. The Indexes’ hand controls detect each finger, as well as the squeeze, which makes it easy to use.

We’ll let you test a rehabilitation game for people with cerebrovascular disease.

Examples

  • CVA rehabilitation game
  • Index’s own demos

Varjo XR-4

Developed in Finland, Varjo is mainly aimed at companies for design and simulation purposes. Varjo glasses have been used to train astronauts, among others. Varjo glasses need a powerful computer to work.

A demo of the Varjo glasses is coming up, where you can take a tour of the Savonian Campus Centre.

Examples

  • Human Anatomy
  • Varjo’s own demos

Microsoft HoloLens 2

HoloLens 2 enable an augmented reality view. Microsoft has four directions in which they are targeting HoloLens: industry, engineering and construction, healthcare and education. HoloLens can track your gaze, your hand movements and take voice guidance. You can share the image you see in real time or record it for later review.

Examples

  • Orientations

Vuzix M4000

These AR glasses are mainly made for industrial, fieldwork and warehouse logistics applications. They can read barcodes and display text, images, video and 3D models. The smart glasses also have speech recognition, which enables the use of voice commands.

Examples

  • Remote access/control with glasses

Cameras

Leica BLK360 G1

The Leica BLK360 is officially a laser pointer. Laser scanning is the process of pointing the device at a surface, measuring the distance and recording the position – when this is done many times – the result is a point cloud. In addition to the geometric data, the point cloud stores metadata such as the intensity or colour of the points. By processing the point cloud, spaces can be modelled.

Examples

  • Presentation of the water laboratory

Insta 360X3

The Insta 360 X3 allows you to shoot 360° video at 5.7K resolution. The camera has integrated image stabilisation and can also shoot underwater. The Insta 360 camera can be used, for example, to show off a room.

GoPro 7

GoPro 7 on action camera. It allows you to shoot high-quality 4K video. With a range of accessories, you can attach the GoPro to your chest or bike, for example, freeing up your hands. We have used the GoPro to make a variety of educational videos.

Examples

  • Video tutorials

Robots

Pepper

The humanoid robot Pepper can also be found on our premises. The robot is designed to interact with humans, it can talk and listen. You can play a quiz with Pepper, she can guide you through a gymnastics session or perform a dance for you. Pepper has toured the XR Center with staff to introduce herself.

Cat robot

A robot that simulates a real cat, which can be petted and brushed. The cat vocalises, wags its limbs and feels like a real cat – there’s no danger of it flapping its claws or allergising its fur. The weight of the robot on your lap will put many people at ease, and the cat will provide company for lonely people.

We also have a graveyard of XR equipment, so welcome to discover the technology of the past.
